The Compasses Inn - Fordingbridge

I can echo what many others have said: the place could do with a bit of a facelift. That said, the room we stayed in was clean, comfortable, and warm. We spent two nights here, and on both evenings we enjoyed a varied menu. We understand the chef and the owners’ family are Nepalese, so alongside the traditional country pub classics there’s also an extensive Nepalese and Indian menu to choose from. We went for the Indian dishes both nights and they were absolutely divine.|The staff were friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. We were shown to our room, given clear explanations about its quirks, and even offered help with our bags — service you’d be lucky to find in a hotel at twice the price these days.|This is very much a locals’ pub, with a main bar (complete with pool table) and a lounge bar with more casual seating, perfect for a meal. The locals themselves were engaging and great fun to chat with. A special mention must go to the young bar lady, who went out of her way to provide exceptional service throughout our stay.|We chose this place because it was reasonably priced and only about 45 minutes from Southampton. Yes, it’s a little dated, and you can’t help but imagine what you might do to refresh it — which picture you’d hang there, which paint colour you’d pick, maybe even a lush green carpet! But despite that, the pub has a genuine warmth and charm that makes it easy to overlook the décor.|Being above the main bar, we did experience a little noise in our room, but it wasn’t disruptive enough to spoil our stay. Overall, a charming, friendly, and great-value place that we’d happily return to.

The staff were super friendly, welcoming, attentive and helpful. Room 2 was comfy but the mattresses need changing. Very clean establishment and we had an evening meal which was great (had to box up half of it to take home!) and the breakfast was excellent. It could do with a refurbishment as others have said but I'd start with the mattresses.

Staff were very friendly and helpful can't fault them. Room was adequate for one night. Bed not particularly comfortable but overall value for money. Breakfast was hearty and satisfying. Didn't eat on the evening but the menu looked interesting. Hotel just needs a little bit of TLC. I would stay again as its great for the price for the area.

Lovely part of the country. Friendly staff and nice welcome on arrival. A little bit tired and doesn't look much like the lovely photo advertised. Our room was spacious and clean with a large comfy bed. The bathroom is very dated and needs some tlc. Shower over the bath is very powerful, almost too much as you have to point the water at the wall otherwise it floods the bathroom. Food is delicious and breakfast plentiful. There is a box to put your key if you would like your bedroom refreshed ie fresh towels and water. We did this but unfortunately our room didn't get cleaned and we were then told we should have left our key at reception. Slight breakdown in communication and although requested a few times, we never did get any clean cups for tea/coffee. Overall though, a great base for exploring the New Forest and surrounding areas. Our room said "countryside views" but we were overlooking the road, this was Room 5. Not an issue as the road is not overly busy and didn't cause any issue at night which was very peaceful and we both slept well.

Visited twice recently and on both occasions the food has been exceptional. My husband and i both ordered off the Ghurka and Nepalese menu - i am coining the phrase ‘Ghurkanese’. |The food on both occasions was so full of flavour, tender juicy meat and lovely vegetables. Even the nann bread was the best we have ever had. It even had a little crunch to it, so good! |The pub is very tired and can really do with a freshening up as mentioned in other comments, but don’t let this put you off stopping off for a bite to eat. We highly recommend it. Cannot wait for our next visit.

We arrived at the Inn and first it looked bit tired from the outside and when we went in we were met by a very cheery young man who introduced us to reception booked us in and took us to our room.. Our room was lovely and basic .. We found out there was no plug in the sink so we explained to the young man but he didnt understand what we meant. The next morning we came down to breakfast and met the lady sorting it out and mentioned to her.. she knew what we meant and hey presto when we came back from day out the new plug in the sink was fitted.. We certainly enjoyed our stay and the meal was beautiful the first night we had there. It was clean too and the shower was good in our room. There was minimal noise we slept very well indeed despite the room facing the road but it is very small village anyway. We will certainly stay there again as the atomsphere was good and staff very nice and friendly. We cannot fault anything at all with our room once the plug issue was sorted. The bed was so comfortable.. We aim to try for our room next time.

Had the sharing starter and a Nepalese lamb dish to share along with a coconut naan bread. It is unusual at my age to come across a new food experience. It was absolutely delicious, can't wait to eat there again and try the other dishes available. Thoroughly recommend!

Go for the food! Amazing. High quality, perfectly cooked. Had dinner and breakfast. Nepalese lamb for dinner. A new and wonderful experience. I would never be able yo make this at home, so I will have to come back. Wide choice at breakfast. I had the cheese omelette. Genius, I've had a lot of cheese omelettes in my time, never this good. Having eaten at a lot of high-end restaurants, I can honestly say it would be hard to beat. As a bonus they offer dog friendly accommodation. Good room, water piping hot. Fantastic shower. The staff too are top notch. Friendly, not in your face, just magically appear when you need. I struggle with dining environments but they made me feel comfortable. I will be back
